PETALING JAYA: Mornings at Persatuan Kebajikan Sayap Kasih Malaysia begin in much the same way.

Breakfast is served at 8.30am, therapy sessions are arranged for those who need them, while others spend the day drawing, exercising, or simply chatting with the caregivers who have become their constant companions.

By evening, another day comes to an end for the 68 residents who call the care centre on Jalan Gasing home. But after 16 years, that routine is about to change.

The organisation, which cares for people with intellectual disabilities, autism, developmental disorders and physical impairments, has been told to vacate its premises after the landlord sold the property. It now has until September to relocate.

Formerly known as iq70plus, Persatuan Kebajikan Sayap Kasih Malaysia has spent years supporting families in need of financial and medical support, stepping in to help vulnerable individuals through public appeals over the years.

Social worker Jesslyn Tan expressed concern that relocating to a new environment may affect the residents who are accustomed to their current residence and daily routine.

“Many of them have been living here for more than 10 years, so moving to a new place may make them feel anxious or uncomfortable. But we have no choice. We have to move out by September,” she told FMT Lifestyle.

The centre urgently needs RM300,000 to relocate and refurbish its new premises in Section 17, Petaling Jaya. As of press time, it has raised about RM125,000.

The funds will cover the cost of transporting residents and equipment, renovating the building to make it wheelchair accessible, installing safety features, paying rental deposits, and ensuring daily care continues uninterrupted throughout the transition.

The relocation fund is separate from the centre’s monthly operating costs of about RM100,000 to run the centre, which occupies two homes on Jalan Gasing.

More importantly, the appeal goes beyond bricks and mortar: many of the residents, aged between seven and 70, have lived at this centre for years.

“Most of them have families but many have simply been left here,” Tan said. “Some have family members who only come to visit during the festive seasons.”

Indeed, for many of the residents, the centre is the only home they know. The caregivers wake them up every morning, help them bathe, prepare their meals, accompany them to therapy, and comfort them when they are upset.

“We will do their best to comfort them and help them slowly adjust to their new home,” Tan said.

Whether that new residence is ready in time now depends largely on public generosity. Without the remaining funds, the NGO will be forced to rely on emergency reserves to ensure the move goes ahead.

“We have to move,” Tan stated simply. “Otherwise, the residents won’t have a place to stay.”
