Kota Samarahan to serve as alternative venue for major state events as Kuching nears saturation, says state minister

KOTA SAMARAHAN, June 28 — Kota Samarahan is being positioned as an alternative hub for major state events through the upcoming Samarahan Boulevard development, as Kuching approaches saturation, said Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is also Asajaya assemblyman said Kuching is increasingly congested when hosting large-scale events, particularly at Padang Merdeka.

“Whenever there are parades or major programmes at Padang Central (Padang Merdeka), the whole of Kuching experiences traffic congestion and the authorities are required to manage the situation.

“Looking at Samarahan, which still has ample available land, I have proposed that the area be planned as a long-term venue for major state-level events,” he said when officiating the Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival here last night.

He added that Samarahan has recorded rapid development over the past 20 to 30 years in terms of economic growth and infrastructure.

According to him, the rising number of vehicles and expansion of residential areas are clear indicators of the district’s progress.

Commenting on the festival, Abdul Karim said it serves as an important platform, particularly for youths, to develop entrepreneurial skills.

He added that food and culture play a vital role in strengthening cultural identity while also contributing to the state’s entrepreneurial economy.

He further noted that similar festivals in Sarawak, including the Kuching Food and Cultural Festival, have gained recognition beyond the state, with even Peninsular Malaysia taking reference from their organisation.

“Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, had contacted Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng to enquire about the dates of the Kuching Food and Cultural Festival so that DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) officers could be sent to observe its organisation, as it is very well executed,” Abdul Karim said.

He also said he had instructed all divisions to organise their own signature food and cultural festivals, noting that Sibu hosts the Borneo Cultural Festival while Miri organises Taste of Borneo.

During the event, the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) also unveiled its official mascot, named Nadi.

In other developments, Abdul Karim urged property owners to ensure they pay their assessment tax so that local authorities can continue to provide quality public services and facilities to residents.

He added that revenue from assessment tax is one of the main sources of funding for various services, including waste collection, maintenance of recreational parks, and the upkeep of residential area cleanliness.
