KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Garnier Malaysia has launched a sustainability initiative that includes a 1,500-tree planting project at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and a beauty packaging recycling programme at selected Watsons stores across the Klang Valley.
Announced in conjunction with World Environment Day few weeks ago, the initiative forms part of Garnier’s global Collective for the Planet campaign, which aims to encourage environmental action through community participation and responsible consumption.
The tree-planting project will see 1,500 native tropical forest trees planted across 8.6 acres of the UPSI Arboretum in collaboration with the Malaysia Nature Society, 500 UPSI student volunteers and Garnier stakeholders.
According to the company, the selected tree species were chosen for their role in supporting local biodiversity, including providing food sources for birds, insects and small mammals.
Garnier Malaysia director Jaren Ong said the initiative was designed to turn environmental awareness into tangible community action.
“The full impact of this Eco Campus will unfold over the years ahead, but its story begins with our actions today — proof that collective efforts build lasting change,” he said at the launch beginning of June.
UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Dr Suriani Abu Bakar said the project aligns with the university’s commitment to community service and environmental education.
Alongside the tree-planting initiative, Garnier Malaysia is introducing its RECYCLE FOR REWARDS with Garnier @ Watsons programme, which allows consumers to recycle empty plastic beauty packaging at selected Watsons outlets.
The programme accepts recyclable beauty packaging from any brand and aims to divert up to 50kg of plastic waste from landfills through recycling and responsible disposal.
Collection bins have been placed at selected Watsons stores, including outlets at Sunway Pyramid, 1 Utama, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, NU Sentral, MyTown and Sunway Velocity.
The initiative is part of Garnier’s broader sustainability efforts aimed at making environmental action more accessible to consumers and local communities.
