TLDR

  • GEV fell 10.6% in May and has continued lower into June, despite strong fundamentals
  • CEO Scott Strazik flagged pushback against data center projects from U.S. states at a late May conference
  • GE Vernova is locked in a legal dispute with Iberdrola over the Vineyard Wind project, with over $1 billion in claimed damages
  • Q1 EPS came in at $17.44 vs. $1.95 expected; revenue hit $9.34 billion, up 17% year over year
  • Wall Street consensus remains “Moderate Buy” with an average price target of $1,090.76

GE Vernova (GEV) stock opened Friday at $935.26, well below its 12-month high of $1,181.95, after sliding 10.6% in May and extending those losses into June.

The drop looks puzzling on paper. Q1 earnings were a blowout — EPS of $17.44 crushed the $1.95 consensus estimate. Revenue came in at $9.34 billion, up 17% year over year. The company raised its 2026 revenue growth guidance to 18% at the midpoint and reported a total backlog of $263 billion.

So what went wrong?

Two things hit the stock in quick succession — and both rattled a market that had already priced in near-perfection.

GEV had rallied 255% in the year through April 2026. At that valuation, there wasn’t much room for anything less than flawless execution.

CEO Comments Spark a Rethink

At the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in late May, CEO Scott Strazik flagged something investors hadn’t fully factored in. He noted that U.S. states are beginning to push back on new data center development, citing grid strain and rising electricity rates for local consumers.

Some customers are struggling to move projects forward due to local and regulatory resistance. That was enough to spook the market.

Wall Street read it as a reality check. After a near-vertical run, any friction in the growth story gave investors a reason to book profits.

The Vineyard Wind Legal Fight

The second headwind is a legal dispute with Spain’s Iberdrola over the Vineyard Wind offshore project. GE Vernova tried to exit the project, citing $360 million in unpaid invoices. Iberdrola countersued, claiming more than $1 billion in damages linked to a 2024 wind turbine blade failure.

A Massachusetts judge has ordered GE Vernova to remain on the project or resolve the matter through arbitration. The case adds a layer of uncertainty around execution and potential liability.

On the insider side, CEO Victor Abate sold 4,819 shares on June 1st at an average price of $948.08, reducing his direct ownership by 72.42%. CAO Matthew Potvin also sold in May. These disclosures added to cautious sentiment, though insider sales of this size are not unusual at high-valuation companies.

Capital Group Investment Management trimmed its GEV position by 30.1% in Q4, selling 1,174 shares. Meanwhile, larger institutions including Vanguard, State Street, and Geode Capital all added to their positions.

Analyst View

Despite the pullback, analyst sentiment is holding firm. Susquehanna set a $1,300 price target. Oppenheimer matched that at $1,303. TD Cowen lifted its target from $780 to $1,220. Royal Bank of Canada raised its target to $1,195 with an Outperform rating.

Of 29 analysts covering the stock, 22 have a Buy rating, two have Strong Buy, and five have a Hold. The consensus target is $1,090.76.

GEV’s gas power backlog has grown from 83 GW to 100 GW, with management expecting to cross 110 GW by year-end. Customers ordering today face a waitlist stretching to 2029.

The company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share, payable July 14th to holders of record on June 16th.
