India’s growing regulatory pressure on cryptocurrency transactions has pushed the local price of Tether’s USDT to its highest premium over the U.S. dollar in 2026 underscoring how enforcement measures are making access to dollar-backed stablecoins increasingly expensive.

USDT was trading at around 102.88 Indian Rupees on June 29 2026, roughly 8.5% above the official USD/INR exchange rate of about 94.65 rupees, according to market data. The premium reflects local supply constraints rather than any loss of USDT’s global dollar peg, where the stablecoin continues to trade close to $1.

The widening spread follows recent enforcement actions by India’s Enforcement Directorate against firms accused of facilitating unauthorized cross-border remittances using stablecoins. The raids disrupted a key source of USDT inflows into the country, tightening supply as demand for dollar-denominated digital assets remained strong.

Market participants say the premium has more than doubled from the typical 3% to 4% range seen in recent months highlighting how regulatory uncertainty is increasingly being reflected in crypto pricing. India’s existing crypto tax regime, including a 30% tax on gains and a 1% tax deducted at source on transactions, had already made access to digital assets more costly before the latest enforcement measures.

The price gap illustrates how local policy can distort access to dollar liquidity even when a globally traded stablecoin remains fully pegged to the U.S. currency. For Indian traders, businesses and remittance users relying on USDT, the premium effectively raises the cost of entering crypto markets and moving value across borders.

The development also highlights a broader challenge facing regulators globally:

Restrictions on stablecoin access can reduce liquidity and widen market spreads before regulated alternatives are available, increasing costs for illicit financial flows.
