Teen who caused 3 road deaths sent to Henry Gurney School

PETALING JAYA: The Seremban magistrates’ court today ordered a teenager, whose reckless driving in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan, last year caused the deaths of three people, to be sent to the Henry Gurney School in Melaka for three years.

Magistrate Nurul Azuin Talhah handed down the sentence after the accused, now 18, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, Utusan Malaysia reported.

The charge provides for imprisonment of five to 10 years and a fine of RM20,000 to RM50,000, upon conviction.

Azuin ordered that the teenager be sent to the school with immediate effect, and placed his mother, as his guardian, under a good behaviour bond for three years with a surety of RM4,000.

She also ordered for the teenager to be supervised by a probation officer for a year after his sentence ends.

The teenager was also fined RM2,000, or a month’s imprisonment in default, for driving without a licence.

His parents were also ordered to pay RM2,000 in compensation to each of the victims’ families.

The accused previously claimed trial after being charged in April last year with causing the deaths of Aidil Ramdan Abdullah, 15, Aswari Lotpi, 16, and Aisar Azim Abdullah, 17, at the Taman Matahari junction along Jalan Persiaran Senawang 1 on March 6.

He filed representations to the Attorney-General’s Chambers in November, which were rejected, before changing his plea and pleading guilty on Dec 17.

His lawyer, Johan Radzi, requested for the sentence to be postponed as the teenager, who came to court using a walking stick, was in poor health.

The court rejected the request and said the school has facilities for his treatment.
