TLDR

  • ZEC trades at $462.33 as of July 4, up 13.3% over seven days
  • A soundness flaw found in the Orchard shielded pool in May triggered a 50%+ price drop
  • Developers patched the bug and announced the Ironwood upgrade (NU6.3) on June 6
  • Ironwood seals the old Orchard pool and opens a new verified one, targeting July 21 mainnet launch
  • Analyst Ali Charts says ZEC bounced from mid-range support and eyes $680 if momentum holds

Zcash has gained 13.3% over the past seven days, with ZEC trading at $462.33 on July 4. The move comes as developers close in on the Ironwood network upgrade, scheduled for mainnet activation around July 21, 2026.

The rally follows a rough stretch. ZEC fell more than 50% from around $630 down to the $250–$300 range after a security flaw was disclosed in late May. Since then, the patch and a clear upgrade roadmap have helped the price recover.

On May 29, security researcher Taylor Hornby, working under contract for Shielded Labs, found a flaw in the Orchard shielded pool’s elliptic curve code. The bug sat inside the halo2_gadgets crate and allowed a prover to swap in the wrong base point, causing the circuit to accept an invalid proof.

Because Orchard hides sender, receiver, and amount by design, a counterfeit note created inside the pool would look identical to a real one. The bug had been live since Orchard launched in May 2022.

Core engineers confirmed the issue within hours. A soft fork disabled new Orchard actions around June 1. A hard fork, NU6.2, followed on June 3, restoring full Orchard functionality after roughly one day of paused shielded transactions. Zcash Open Development Lab and Shielded Labs say they found no evidence the bug was ever exploited.

Ironwood Seals the Old Orchard Pool

Announced on June 6, Ironwood ships as NU6.3 and was built by ZODL, Tachyon, Valar Group, the Zcash Foundation, and Shielded Labs. The upgrade opens a new Ironwood shielded pool built on the patched circuit with formal verification and independent audits.

At the same time, the legacy Orchard pool gets sealed. New deposits are blocked, internal transfers are disabled, and funds can only exit toward the Ironwood pool or a transparent address.

Once the old pool stops taking new value, any theoretical counterfeit notes become boxed in. Full node operators can then verify total circulating supply without needing developer assurances.

Ironwood also carries ZIP 2005, a note format change designed to support recovery in a future quantum computing scenario.

Testnet activation landed around July 3–4. Mainnet is targeted for around July 21. Node operators on older zcashd builds must migrate to Zebra or an updated client before that date.

Technical Outlook: $500 Resistance in Focus

Analyst Ali Charts noted that ZEC successfully bounced from the channel’s mid-range support and, if momentum continues, the next major target sits near $680 at the top of the channel.

Price Levels Traders Are Watching

Analysts identify $500–$520 as the key resistance zone. Reclaiming that level would strengthen the technical case for a broader recovery. A sustained close below $380 could expose ZEC to a retest near $340.

Moving averages across multiple timeframes continue to lean bullish. Oscillators remain broadly neutral, which analysts read as consolidation rather than reversal.

Investor Chamath Palihapitiya has publicly flagged Ironwood’s supply verification model as a meaningful step for the coin.

Formal verification results are due before mainnet, and wallet, exchange, and infrastructure providers still need to ship updated support within the next two and a half weeks.
